COMPETENCE BASED INTERVIEWS – HOW TO PREPARE

A higher number of employers are moving towards Competence Base Interviews in recruiting candidates. This is a drastic shift from employing people using redundant questions such as “Can you tell us about yourself?”, “How many are you in your family?” and “What are your hobbies?”. Such questions do not give enough information about the performance if the candidate. Competence based interviews shift the process and ask questions which assess relevant competencies of the candidate.

In responding to Competence Based interviews, candidates must consider the STAR model in all their responses to scenarios posed to them.

S – Situation

T – Task

A – Action

R – Results This model needs thorough preparation and ensures that the employee has the ability to explain their impact on a previous situation. It is believed that previous experiences of an employee in similar situations can be used as a predictor of their future performance
