There are times which you may be unemployed or taking a gap year in your career. Although you do not have major commitments, it is necessary to ensure that you find an activity that will shape the future of your career. Some people facilitated a career switch or added an additional skill during the gap year or periods of unemployment. After being retrenched, it is not time to spend on unproductive activities and self-pity. Rather focus on developing any of the following:
- Learn a new skill or hobby
- Do online courses
- Volunteer at an organisation to keep your skills sharp until the next job
- Keep networking at workshops and conferences to maintain your relevance
- Undertake independent consulting
- Participate in fellowships and study tours
- Write a book or memoir
Remember that some of these activities are key to keep you focused and to continue enhancing your self-worth. During unemployment, there are various thoughts, some which are suicidal, feelings of regret, unworthiness and desperation. By undertaking productive activities, you keep your mind in an affirmative state.
